Remove from oven and let stand 5 minutes before serving. Repeat with another layer of the coated pasta, the sauce, and the mozzarella. Spoon half of the remaining sauce over the top, then top with half of the remaining mozzarella cheese. Step 6 Add half of the coated pasta to a large casserole dish.Pour it into the bowl with the cheese mixture and toss to slightly combine (there should still be large lumps.) Add the cooled meat sauce and toss to combine. You can use ground turkey or beef in place of Italian sausage. Step 5 Drain the pasta and rinse under cool water to stop the cooking and cool it down. If you want a mild version of this recipe, use regular Italian sausage and omit the red pepper flakes.Stir together just a couple of times (do not mix completely).
